Kokoroko (UK)
Hype alert! Contemporary jazz sensation Kokoroko is in town! A year after releasing their first piece ‘Abusey Junction’ and over 30 million Youtube views later, fans and critics alike are lining up to see the London-based group. The inevitable pressure that comes with such a meteoric rise does not shake Kokoroko in the slightest. The group’s name does mean “be strong” in Urhobo. Just listen to the first eponymous EP of the 8-piece band. You’ll hear how cool they can keep it and just how talented they are.
Labelling their sound as simply “jazz” minimizes the complexity in the way afrobeat, music from West Africa or Ethiopia, funk, soul and even R’n’B come together and unravel as you listen to their music.
A definite must-see!
