Just saying the word India is enough to evoke the idea of intense, spiritually-infused sound. But is it really the case? The Barmer Boys are challenging this preconceived notion. They are forward-thinking in their sound, even if their music is being played in traditional weddings and birthday parties in their communities. During their live performances, these four Rajasthan nomads mix beatbox and sufi trance, creating a vertiginous sound. No, not the kind that makes you feel like you're falling into the abyss, more like the kind that elevates you towards the sky.
To get you there, Rais Khan clenches the morsing between his teeth while Mangey Khan incessantly pumps his harmonium. A sampling of their music is enough to understand how they got the chance to play with Bombino, Vieux Farka or Mamadou Diabate.
